Winter 2024: Literary Feature - Natural Landscape Photography Awards

I am thrilled to announce that my photo - Life on the Edge - has been featured in the 2024 Natural Landscape Photography Awards Book. 12,179 photographs were submitted to the competition by 1,134 photographers from 59 countries, and images that placed in the top 1% were chosen for the book.

I took this image while camping at 20,000 ft. during a monthlong expedition on the iconic 'Ama Dablam'. I was tied to a rope on a cliff above a thousand foot drop-off while taking this image. Shown here is the incredibly situated ‘Camp 2’ on Ama, one of the most unique places on Earth to camp. The precarious campsite lies on an exposed rock ledge above a huge drop off. Each tent is tied to rocks to prevent it from blowing off the cliff. As you can imagine, sleep was awful given the tents are slanted, lying atop uneven boulders. On top of that, you’re at 20,000 ft. and just finished an intense day of climbing to reach Camp 2.

Winter 2024: Finalist in Glacier Park Conservancy Photo Contest

'Eight Lakes Panorama' was named the 3rd place finalist in the 2024 Glacier Park Conservancy Photo Contest! There were over 1,600 photos submitted from 400 photographers, so extremely grateful to have been chosen as a finalist.

Excitingly, I was named a contest finalist for the 4th year in a row!

Midnight Climb to get this Image

'Grinnell Glacier From Up High' was also awarded Honorable Mention. To get this image, I awoke at midnight and climbed for several hours in the dark in order to reach the summit of Mount Grinnell to capture this rarely seen vantage point at sunrise overlooking the iconic Grinnell Glacier. Lake McDonald can be seen in the top right.

Photographs were anonymously judged based on composition, artistry, and originality by the Glacier Conservancy staff. October 2024: Highly Honored Finalist in Nature’s Best Photography International Awards

I am thrilled to announce that my photo - High Altitude Awakenings - has been awarded Highly Honored in the 'Outdoor Adventure' category of the 2024 Nature’s Best Photography International Awards! The contest is one of the largest globally and features the top 100 nature images in the world from more than 25,000 entries from photographers in 62 countries. My image was chosen as one of the Top 10 in its category, and the photo will be published in the 2024 Winter Special Collectors’ Edition of Nature’s Best Photography magazine.

I took this image from my campsite on the iconic 'Ama Dablam' at 21,000 ft. without the use of supplemental oxygen. This camp site, known as Camp 3, is one of the most unique places on Earth to camp. Sleep was miserable here, and was exacerbated by my 20+ camera batteries shoved in my sleeping bag so they would continue to function (batteries hate cold)...

There is a large serac - a block of ice - that hangs above Camp 3, which we could only hope would remain stable during our time up there. Very sadly, a large serac fall in 2006 killed six at this camp… Thankfully conditions were stable and we left Camp 3 at 2 a.m. in below zero temps to reach the summit of Ama Dablam (22,350 ft.) at sunrise. Our summit day lasted 18 hours, and was the single hardest day of climbing in my life. The second we reached base camp I threw up and struggled to pour myself a cup of tea but it was all worth it… This climb was part of a 30+ day expedition in Nepal in November 2023.

September 2024: Featured on Front Cover - 2025 Glacier Park Calendar!

One of my images will be featured on the front cover of the official 2025 Glacier National Park Calendar, produced by the Glacier Park Conservancy! The Conservancy is the official non-profit fundraising partner of Glacier National Park. Proceeds from your purchase support critical projects and programs throughout Glacier National Park.

The image chosen - Sublime Siyeh Sunrise - was taken at sunrise atop one of the highest peaks in the park. To get this shot, I started climbing at 1:30 a.m. and climbed in the dark for four hours in order to reach the summit by dawn. I ran into a grizzly up top at 5 a.m. but thankfully it minded its own business. I then took this image standing atop a 3,500+ ft. cliff to capture one of the best views in the park at sunrise!

Getting up at 1 a.m. was worth it for this one!

June 2024: 2024 Summer Art Show Schedule Revealed

I will be an exhibiting artist at the below juried fine art shows. These shows are the best way to see my work in person so hope to see you there!

May 2024: Denali: The Apex of North America!

I just returned from a successful expedition on North America's highest peak, Denali, which stands 20,310 ft. tall. It was my 5th time above 20,000' but this trip was one of the hardest. The mountain is the coldest place on Earth outside Antarctica, and temps up top dropped to 40 below with the wind chill. I spent 15 nights in a tent in below zero temps, and had to spend hours each night shoveling snow to build tent platforms and boil water with my teammates, given we were on an unguided expedition. Sleep was miserable and exacerbated by my 5+ camera batteries shoved in my sleeping bag each night, so they would continue to function (batteries hate cold).

I had to carry 100 pounds of gear up the mountain, which presented challenges. 40 pounds on my backpack and 60 pounds on a sled, which I pulled up the mountain. I also brought skis and was able to ski down part of the mountain (skiing down with a sled proved quite difficult). Denali is considered the highest mountain on Earth from its base to summit and has also been considered the largest mountain on Earth given its topographical prominence.

Given the extreme cold, I'm thankful to be home without frostbite. It was one of the hardest trips of my life but well worth it. I look forward to sharing the images soon!

One of the happiest (and hardest) days of my life. It was cold!

January 2024: Featured on 'The Modern Explorer' Podcast

I was interviewed on 'The Modern Explorer' Podcast with host Corey Lynch. From Corey... "This episode is loaded with adventure and wisdom from an absolute hardcore mountain photographer in Jason Weiss. He shares stories from the start of his time out west and the spark that a backpack through the John Muir Trail had in leading him to gradually make his way to bigger and badder stuff. Hop on for a listen to hear about his time in Nepal and his ambitious project of photographing sunrise from the summit of Ama Dablam (22,349'). Jason is sure to get the inner explorer in you fired up!"

Fall 2023: Successful Himalayan Expedition!

I just returned from an expedition in the Himalaya, where I spent a month in the Everest Region climbing Ama Dablam (22,349 ft.), Mera Peak (21,246 ft.), and Amphu Labsta Pass (19,200 ft). I spent 7 days above 19,000 ft., which took a toll on my body as I used no supplemental oxygen at altitude. Sleep was miserable and exacerbated by my 20+ camera batteries shoved in my sleeping bag so they would continue to function (batteries hate cold). Wind chill was 20 degrees below zero on the summits!

Ama Dablam is one of the steepest peaks to climb in the Himalaya and the route is more technical than Everest. Photographing from that altitude was incredibly difficult but spectacular! At most times I was taking photos from 21,000 ft. while tied to a rope on extremely exposed snow and rock. Below are a few images from the recent expedition!
