Dusk settles over Half Dome, Clouds Rest, Nevada Falls, and the greater Yosemite Valley, photographed from Glacier Point on a brisk mid-January evening. In winter, the road to Glacier Point is closed, turning the outing into a nearly 23-mile round-trip adventure from the seasonal closure at Badger Pass.

***I chose to ski tour the entire route in a single day—skinning 11.5 miles in, photographing sunset and dusk, then skiing back out in the dark solo.*** All told, it was a 12-hour push, returning to the car around 11 p.m., completely wiped. Lesson learned: never wear ski boots for 12 consecutive hours… I paid for it with seven blisters the next day.

Contrast that with summer, when countless photographers can simply drive in and line up each evening to capture this iconic view. But to experience Yosemite like this—to photograph these peaks in winter’s quiet, wrapped in frost and solitude—you have to earn it. Skiing in, braving the cold, and having the place to yourself is a trade I’ll take any day.
