Dawn light over the famed Maroon Bells (14,156') photographed high above Highland Peak and the Aspen Highlands ski resort. Rather than capturing the most photographed mountains in the U.S. from the traditional viewpoint below, I wanted to showcase these iconic peaks from a rare perspective high above.

Reaching this vantage point required several hours of climbing through the darkness in a snowstorm, gaining more than 4,000 vertical feet before sunrise. But the real challenge wasn't the climb—it was the years of planning behind it. My first visit was devoted entirely to scouting the perfect composition, spending a full day traversing ridgelines in search of the ideal vantage point. I then waited another year for the right combination of peak fall color and a fresh dusting of snow, knowing the image would only come together when every element aligned.

The classic autumn photograph of the Maroon Bells is taken from the shores of Maroon Lake, visible in the image, where hundreds of photographers gather before sunrise each fall. I've always wondered what the view would look like from above. After years of planning and more than 20,000 feet of climbing spread across multiple trips, I think the effort was well worth it.
