A moment that takes your breath away.

This was one of the most dramatic light shows I had ever witnessed—and it lasted for just an instant. I had been scouting photography locations and knew I wanted to photograph Telluride’s iconic valley floor in autumn. But the entire valley was socked in by the storm, so I drove up above town on Last Dollar Road. There, I noticed a clearing on the horizon. It meant there was a chance the setting sun could break through and illuminate the box canyon—and potentially create a rainbow. With time running out, I immediately headed back down into town and hurried to the valley floor. I would normally use a telephoto lens for a scene like this, so I had left my wide-angle lens behind. When I arrived, it was dark, gray, and seemingly uneventful. Then, all of a sudden—boom. The rainbow appeared. I knew instantly that I needed my wide-angle lens to capture the entire arc, so I made a full sprint back to my car to retrieve it. For what it’s worth, it may have been the fastest I’ve ever run. I made it back just in time. Within thirty seconds of capturing this photograph, the rainbow had completely dissipated.

I had missed a similar rainbow in this exact location by just a few minutes several days earlier, which made finally capturing this moment that much more special. To witness such vibrant sunset light, a full rainbow—with a double rainbow nearly forming—and peak fall color all at once was truly a one-of-a-kind moment. And then came the icing on the cake: the echoing bugles of elk nearby on the valley floor. Timing is everything.
